A proud day

Hey everyone

I have now been living in Brooklyn for almost eight months. Yesterday was a day that I will never forget.

The first time that I ever picked up a guitar and played a song in public was in the ‘Duke of York’ pub in Belfast, sat next to my big brother Ciaran. I think I was 18 at the time. From that day I knew that I had caught a bug; something that my brother Ciaran had caught long before me.

Since then I have done countless gigs with my brother, all over Ireland and further afield. When I first visited New York in 2009 I would demo songs in my bedroom in Queens and I would send them to Ciaran, and await his feedback a few hours later. I have always felt so lucky  to be blessed with a big brother who is one of the hardest working and talented musicians that you could ever want to meet, and at the same time who has always been there to help me out when I needed him.

Most people in bands will have a few highs and lows in their careers. Sometimes it can be something so small that will give you just enough inspiration to keep chasing that dream, and sometimes it takes a million and one small things to come together. Ciaran once told me something that has always stuck with me. He said to me that if you believe in something enough, and work hard at it, then this will shine through, and other people will see this in the music and then you never know what could happen. For the majority of his life Ciaran has been doing just that. Yesterday he announced to the world that he is the new lead singer of INXS and that he will be collaborating with Andrew Farris on a new INXS album… wow.

I’ve sat on this news for so long, and when the news broke yesterday it almost felt like I didn’t know anything about it at all! It was a totally surreal feeling. I felt blown away, excited and nervous, all at the same time. To top it all off I just happened to be playing a couple of tunes at a wonderful event in Manhattan to open the New York Cinemagic Festival… hosted by none other than Mr Liam Neeson. So I am standing on a rooftop in Manhattan, over looking the greatest city in the world, Liam Neeson is on my left, my mum is on my right, and the whole time I have ‘Tiny Summer’ by INXS running through my head. Seriously I had to pinch myself.

Everyone loves a good story. Our Ciaran could write one hell of a book… and maybe it could be a film some day… and Liam Neeson could play me!

I’m away to try and get some sleep for I certainly didn’t get too much last night.

Peace.
